Solar shouldn't be only for people who own a roof.
Most of us live in flats and share one rooftop with our neighbours. We started Protostar so that shared roof could put free solar power into every home under it.
One Building Changed Everything
Rahul Rajan grew up around his father's construction business in Pune, watching buildings rise from bare plots. He went on to study civil engineering at the University of Western Australia, then came home to build.
One thing kept bothering him. An enormous amount of sunshine lands on Indian rooftops every single day, yet the families living in flats under those roofs could not use any of it. Rooftop solar stayed a privilege for people with a bungalow and a roof of their own.
So in 2019 he bet an entire building on a different idea: Scorpio, Fortune Estates. Instead of installing solar that only powers staircases and lobbies, he invented the Smart Power Distribution Unit (SPDU) there, so every one of the building's 24 families gets its own metered share of the rooftop. Each home receives 100 free units of electricity every month.
The flats sold at market price, with zero green premium. The building became India's first net energy positive affordable housing project, earned the IGBC Platinum rating, and won national awards. Today it is taught as a Harvard Business Publishing case study authored by IIM Bangalore.
Protostar Technologies was spun off to bring that same technology to existing buildings everywhere. Today 300 flats run on it, and we are just getting started.

Milestones & Achievements
From one building in Pune to 300 flats and counting.
The Building That Started It
Our founder completed Scorpio, Fortune Estates in Pune: 24 flats, each with its own share of rooftop solar. India's first net energy positive affordable housing project, rated IGBC Platinum.
National Recognition
Scorpio won the AESA Award and Times Real Estate Icons in 2020, then the Bharat Leadership Award in 2021, presented by the Governor of Maharashtra.
Protostar Is Born
Founded Protostar Technologies to bring what worked at Scorpio to every building. Built and tested the first SPDU, the device that shares one rooftop's solar power between many homes.
Patents Filed
Filed patents for the SPDU technology, now three filings: two in India and one in the US.
Policy Win & Case Study
MERC notified Virtual Net Metering in August 2024, citing Protostar's submission. Scorpio became a Harvard Business Publishing case study authored by IIM Bangalore. Launched our cloud monitoring platform.
300 Flats Powered
300 flats now run on their own share of rooftop solar. Released the 3-phase SPDU and launched our iOS and Android apps.
Today
Bringing shared rooftop solar to more societies across Pune and Maharashtra. Your building could be next.
What Drives Us
Innovation
We invent what doesn't exist yet. Three patents protect the technology that shares one roof's solar power between many homes.
Sustainability
Every building we retrofit means hundreds of people running their homes on clean power from their own rooftop.
Accessibility
Solar shouldn't be only for people who own a bungalow. We make it work for flats, shops, and offices too.
Reliability
Our systems run quietly on your roof every day. If the sun isn't enough, your regular supply takes over without you noticing.
Your Roof Is Waiting
Whether you live in a flat, sit on your society's committee, or build new projects, we'd love to show you what your rooftop can do.
